There are a few important differences that make our practice unique, especially within the Canadian landscape. First, and most importantly, we believe very strongly in the fiduciary standard. This legal standard mandates that we put our clients' interests ahead of our own in everything that we do. This is very different from the investment industry's suitability standard, which says that an investment only needs to be suitable for a client but not necessarily in their best interest.
Secondly, we manage our clients' portfolios within an institutional framework; not the typical private-investor retail manner. This institutional-grade approach means that we have access to, and conduct research on, all assets classes - not simply stocks, mutual funds and bonds. We utilize where appropriate real estate, private equity, hedge funds, indexed investments (ETFs) and sophisticated structured products to give our portfolios a superior risk/return profile. Institutional-quality also means that we follow the tenets of Nobel Prize winning Modern Portfolio Theory, vigorously reduce costs, don't "sell" products, eliminate all biases and conflicts (i.e. fee-based compensation, no commissions) and only care about long-term compounded returns (i.e. we control emotional responses to market noise and look to capitalize on the less disciplined behaviour of many investors when markets falter).
Lastly, we’re dedicated to providing our clients with clear, consolidated reporting with regards to both investment performance and costs. Therefore, our clients always know what they pay and what their investment performance has been - something that is drastically lacking in the sales-focused investment industry. This reporting is the same for our private clients as it is for our pension plan and foundation clients.
The above important differences in how we operate our practice provide our clients with transparent, no-conflict expertise so they always know their money is being managed with care and attention.
